Freedom Award Winner

Lavinia Rogers // Newark Collegiate Academy // French Teacher & World Language Chair

In the words of her nominators…

The 2011 Freedom Award goes to French teacher and World Language Chair Lavinia Rogers from Newark Collegiate Academy. In the words of one nominator, “it’s really simple- Lavinia has started a language acquisition revolution for those paying attention. With her uncanny combination of vision, planning, execution, and amazing results, she is proving the possible in language acquisition at NCA, the network, and other KIPP schools across the country.” Her many nominators call her “relentless, intelligent, highly effective, courageous, and a beacon of hope,” and all of them say that she will do anything and everything it takes to serve our kids whether it’s taking them to France over spring break or daily finding ways to improve her practice and help those around her. After the abrupt departure of a teammate, for instance, she stepped up to teach 8 sections of French…in 7 periods. In every situation, she is an innovator whose knowledge and passion are changing how we think about World Language. In the words of one nominator, “Lavinia is an amazing person to work with and an even better friend.”

Freedom (free•dehm) [n.]

At TEAM Schools, we afford our teachers and staff an unusual degree of freedom and autonomy, because we believe in hiring smart people and unleashing them on the challenges that we and our students face. At the heart of this freedom is trust; trust that all TEAM Schools staff members are working as hard and as smart as they can to reach each of our kids. We also know, however, that freedom must be balanced with teamwork and responsibility for results. The Freedom award will go to the person who has best utilized their freedom and trust to create new programs or innovative practices to benefit TEAM students and/or staff.
